General Conference begins TODAY

Beginning today through May 20 the United Methodist Church’s top legislative body will meet in Portland at the Oregon Convention Center. General Conference is the top policy-making body of The United Methodist Church. It meets once every four years. The General Conference is an international body of 864 delegates. The delegates are elected by annual conferences to attend General Conference. They represent all annual conferences from around the world. Half of the delegates are laity, non-clergy members, and half are clergy.
The conference can revise church law, as well as adopt resolutions on current moral, social, public policy, and economic issues. It also approves plans and budgets for church-wide programs for the next four years.
